The course in Disaster reduction management is a specialisation within the Diploma of management programme at the Southern Business School. The Diploma in Management programme has two exit levels. The first is at 120 credits, after one year of study the student obtains the Certificate in Management which is a full qualification at NQF level 5. The second exit level is the 360 credit Diploma in Management at NQF level 6. The second exit level is a comprehensive degree-level qualification in management that will enable successful students to continue their studies at advanced diploma level. Students who obtained the Diploma in Disaster reduction management will be able to complete the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in a minimum of one year. The course focus is on two primary fields: Disaster risk management and Disaster risk reduction.
The programmes included, are:
- The diploma in disaster reduction management can be completed in a minimum of 3 years (NQF 6).
- A certificate in disaster risk management can be completed in 1 year (NQF 5).
- And an advanced diploma in disaster risk management takes 1 year (NQF 7).
- A bachelor of Business administration with a major elective in disaster risk management takes 3 years (NQF 6).

The course in disaster reduction management is aimed at students who will be responsible for managing people, resources, and/or projects, including the management of human resources, public relations, advertising, promotions, portfolios, etc. in the private and the public sectors. Some of the careers a student can engage with this degree are as follows: Business office manager, supervisor, project manager, general manager, executive, human resource manager, etc. The flexible structure of the qualification enables students to select outcomes that meet the diverse roles and contexts required by a wide range of industries and the public sector.
The admission requirements for a diploma in disaster reduction management are:
A matriculation certificate issued by the Matriculation Board, or a National Senior Certificate, or a certificate endorsed by the South African Certification Board as equivalent to the minimum admission requirements for higher education, or any qualification that is deemed equivalent and which has been registered on the National Qualifications Framework. Registration at Southern Business School can be through normal registration, conditional registration, or recognition of prior learning. To apply for normal registration at Southern Business School, the applicant must be in possession of:
1. A Matriculation Certificate issued by the Matriculation Board; or
2. A National Senior Certificate; or
3. A certificate endorsed by the South African Certification Board as equivalent to the minimum admission requirements for higher education; or
4. Any qualification that is deemed equivalent and which has been registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). For more information please see the website.

Registration fee: R500. Cost per subject: R910. Second semester re-registration fee: R350. Prices exclude textbooks.
The registration period for the 2nd semester 2008 closes on 31 July 2008.
