Objectives
The aim of the master programme is to, through knowledge, experience and research build capacities that will reduce disaster risks and contribute to better and more targeted public health based relief following disasters. The Master has the following four objectives:
- To increase the knowledge and understanding of the disaster phenomenon, its different contextual aspects, impacts and public health consequences.
- To increase the knowledge and understanding of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) and to increase skills and abilities for implementing the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategy.
- To ensure skills and abilities to analyse potential effects of disasters and of the strategies and methods to deliver public health response to avert these effects.
- To ensure skills and ability to design, implement and evaluate research on disasters.

Academic Structure and content
The EMMPHID course lasts one academic year from mid September to the last week of June and is divided in two semesters. The course will be taught in English and its structure has three components:
Semester 1 (Autumn Semester, September-January) will be held at the Universidad de Oviedo (Oviedo, Spain) where all students will receive the modules containing the common core disaster elements. Students will then have a mandatory mobility according to their selected study track:
The track in Public health response to disasters will be held at Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm, Sweden) and is developed to serve the educational need of disaster related professionals planning to work in disasters health response as well as those with previous experience from this field.
The track in Epidemiology and Research will be held at Université catholique de Louvain (Brussels, Belgium) and the students will instead follow the Statistics part of the Advanced Disaster Epidemiology and Research Methods module and, due to the research oriented focus of this track it will also include a special Master Thesis preparatory course. The advanced research methodological module is aimed for for the disaster related professionals interested in disaster research or in academic and educational aspects.
In Semester 2 (Spring Semester, February-June) students will continue their respective advanced modules according to study track focus plus a hands-on, practical internship at any of the universities or associated centres included in the program, in which they will collect the data for their Masters Theses and the Master’s Thesis presentation.

Open to: Applicants coming from EU/EEA-EFTA member states and non-EU countries
This course is aimed at a wide range of professionals who carry out or plan to develop their activity in the field of Public Health in emergency and disaster situation. This includes emergency and disaster aid workers from public or private agencies, staff of agencies and companies working in disaster prevention, response, recovery, rehabilitation and planning, members of international organizations, officials of ministries or Government offices related to civil defence and emergency, staff of non-governmental organizations, social researchers, etc.).
The Master is available for a maximum of 30 places for highly qualified students. Candidates from any country are welcome to apply. However, there are differences between European and Non-European candidates for the application process. Erasmus Mundus considers as European:
Students who are nationals of one of the 27 EU Member States: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, UK, Sweden, Bulgaria, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania.
Students who are nationals of one of the EEA-EFTA states: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Students who have resided or carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than 12 months over the past five years (counted backward starting from the official deadline for application to the master) in any of the above listed countries.
All other students are considered as Non-European students, including candidates from: Switzerland, Turkey and the Western Balkan region (i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).

Scholarships
The EMMPHID will propose best ranked students to be awarded with individual Erasmus Mundus scholarships according to the student selection criteria approved by the EACEA and the Erasmus Mundus programme guidelines. The number of scholarships will be defined on a yearly basis.
