Leadership makes significant a difference in managing small-scale routine emergencies as well as complex catastrophic events. This course is designed to prepare students with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective and efficient leadership for managing in all types of situations. The course provides a unique opportunity to develop individual students' leadership and management capacity through advanced analysis of case studies from Australian states and territories, as well as from other parts of the world. In particular, students will learn about how leaders act prior to and during emergencies. The course deals with the questions such as: How do public leaders manage crises? How do leaders anticipate and mitigate risk and future crises? What are the secrets of successful crisis management?

This course also promotes how leaders in public, private can and non-governmental sectors can adopt proactive measures to deal with emergency risk reduction. The course provides a comprehensive package that enhances the leadership capacity of current and future practitioners in this field to utilise that knowledge appropriately, collaboratively and productively in local as well as global context. It creates a solid foundation that enables students to translate academic developments into practical responses, and translates professional experience into the academic sphere of this rapidly evolving sector.

It is expected that the majority of students will be active learners from police, fire and emergency sector who are undertaking the course in order to further their careers. The course provides a holistic, in-depth understanding of the leadership framework for complex crisis management. It moves beyond academic and theoretical engagement to provide practical and applied knowledge required to work in this sector, in national, regional and international settings. The course also provides students with the technical, managerial and leadership skills required to progress in their current careers or to explore new career pathways. The option to focus on a particular area or shift to an aligned specialisation is provided through the wide range of elective units, of which students can choose two.

Successful completion of a recognised Bachelor degree, or equivalent or a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma or equivalent in a relevant field. Consideration will be given to non-graduates who have advanced level VET qualifications such as Diploma or above and at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Applicants will be asked to provide further documentation detailing their employment experience (i.e. Work Experience Certificate from an employer/s) and outlining their roles and achievements in the form of a Curriculum Vitae and a Statement of Purpose. The Statement of Purpose should address why you would like to be admitted into the course, career goals and aspirations and benefits the course will provide you.
