Introducing the Programme
The Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS) is offering Two Years’ Professional Master of Disaster Management (MDM) Professional Post-Graduate Diploma in Disaster Management (PGDDM) Programme and Certificate Course Programme in Disaster Management since 2009. IDMVS is also offering Mphil and PhD degree programmes since session 2012-2013. The Programme Certificate and Diploma Programme were launched with the financial and technical supports from Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) of the Government of Bangladesh. It may be mentioned that the CDMP is financially and technically assisted by UNDP, DFID and European Union and some other development partners. The overall goal of the programme is to provide students with the opportunity to critically compare theory and conceptual approaches on the one hand and practice on the other, and to introduce and discuss their own experiences.
The Masters Programme is designed mainly to share disaster related comprehensive knowledge to the graduates of different disciplines, GO and NGO professionals, academics and researchers. The objective of the programme is to create a cadre of trained person-power by developing skills and creative judgment in an individual for effective management of disaster related issues through a multidisciplinary approach.

The Master of Disaster Management (MDM) is designed to provide advanced level teaching both to fresh graduates and mid-career professionals eager to update their skills or to acquire new ones. The programme aims to train young professionals willing to pursue a career in international or national (or non-governmental) agencies or other relevant fields around the world. The programme emphasizes on improving the knowledge and research skills, focusing both at theoretical and empirical levels, related to disaster, environment, gender, vulnerability climate variability, resilience, adaptation, disaster risk reduction, disaster communication and relevant areas.
The programme will enable the students to:
- Understand the theoretical background to the major debates in disaster, environment, vulnerability and climate variability at the beginning of the 21st century.
- To develop scientific knowledge base by sharing highly professional and skilled knowledge to the disaster managers.
- To create professional graduates on disaster management and climate change by awarding post graduate degree.
- To ensure an effective community participation and development of network with Government and Non-government organizations, development partners, members of the civil society, and community based organizations.
- The students would be able to improve their knowledge and skills on climate change, environment and disaster management/disaster risk reduction.
- The students would be able to implement the knowledge and experiences they gained in their professions arenas.
Tentative Class schedule: Friday and Saturday (Usually).

Target audience
The programme is open to individuals, coming from different disciplines, who plan to specialize and build career on disaster related such as social, cultural, economic, environmental, political and gender related issues in disaster management. The MDM programme covers a wide range of areas from multidisciplinary perspectives.
Admission requirement
Admission is open to individuals, either Bangladeshi or foreign nationals, who have at least Bachelor Degree with Honours or its equivalent from any recognized university or at least a four year graduation degree with second class or 2.5 CGPA out of 4 from any recognized institution, such as medical college/university, engineering university/college, agricultural university/college, defense college, marine academic, armed forces medical college/University, law college, dental college etc., or master degree with pass course graduation. The applicants should have minimum second class or GPA 2.5 out of 5 in both SSC and HSC or its equivalent examinations.
No individual with only pass course graduation degree, or having third division/class at any level is eligible to apply. Individuals in the field of environment, demography, public health, engineering, defense, disaster management and development areas with practical experiences and who are currently in service to the relevant fields are encouraged to apply.
