MSc in Emergency Management and Resilience
Location
Coventry
Overview
This programme is designed to enable the student to develop the necessary knowledge and practical skills needed to identify, critically analyse, assess and successfully manage a range of emergencies; operating confidently in policy development, strategy implementation, and response and recovery management.
Course information
This programme explores the academic tools that enable the analysis and evaluation of emergencies, emergency plans and emergency planning processes, so that the student can go on to devise emergency plans and emergency plan testing programmes relevant to the broad range of threats and risks faced within the UK and beyond.
The student will cover important legal and political frameworks of the UK, European and international emergency and disaster management sector, giving special attention to the 2004 Civil Contingencies Act, which established a new legislative framework for civil protection in the United Kingdom and has significantly increased the demand for professionals in this area.
This legislation imposed a clear set of roles and responsibilities on those Category 1 and 2 organisations with a role to play in preparing for and responding to emergencies, such as the emergency services, local authorities, NHS bodies and those who develop and support Critical National Infrastructure. These include: assessing the risk of emergencies occurring and using this to inform contingency planning with production of a Community Risk Register; putting in place emergency plans; creating business continuity plans to ensure critical functions continue in the event of an emergency; developing communications plans to warn, inform and advise the public in the event of an emergency; sharing information and co-operating with other local responders to enhance coordination and efficiency.
The course also aims to provide with an understanding of the issues that underlie many problems faced by emergency planning and management practitioners, such as multi-agency cooperation and coordination. The student will look at how these issues may be addressed in practice, with a view to enhancing the effectiveness of Integrated Emergency Management.
Responding to the pressure on central and local government to increase levels of preparedness and develop more effective responses to realised risks and threats, the program aims to support the development of the appreciation of community-based approaches to emergency planning and planning, as well as the concept of risk and its importance for organisational crisis and business continuity management.
The student will also be required to carry out an independent piece of research which seeks to develop skills in personal organisation, research and critical thinking, as well as advancing the knowledge in the subject area.
