GEM, the Global Earthquake Model (www.globalquakemodel.org), is a non-profit, international effort to collaboratively improve earthquake risk assessment and understanding worldwide. Together with hundreds of collaborators around the world we are developing global datasets, scientific models, open-source software tools (www.openquake.org) and a platform for communication and calculation of all aspects of earthquake risk. GEM is well connected to the larger international open source, earthquake science and disaster mitigation communities, and interacting with them is part of the experience.
We are looking for a fulltime web developer with at least 5 years ‘all-round’ experience with web sites and applications. The successful candidate will have experience in Linux/FLOSS environment, in JavaScript development and knows how to support various web and server-based services. The ideal candidate is furthermore familiar with UI development. Skills we would like to see you have or grow, are:
Essential skills:
• HTML, CSS
• JavaScript expert with knowledge of extjs and at least one other application framework
• Experience with object-oriented software development
• Django
• Good communications skills in English, the working language
The following skills would be a plus:
• UI design and/or web graphics experience
• Experience with any GIS
• Web systems management
• Community management/support skills
GEM offers a young, innovative and stimulating international working environment in Pavia, a modest size town in the North of Italy located at a convenient 30 km distance from cosmopolitan Milan.
The position is open immediately, for one year, with the possibility of extension.
