The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Urban and Regional Planning has an opening for an Assistant Professor in Environmental Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction. Position #0085298 is a 9 month appointment, permanent, general funds, full time, tenure track position to begin August 1, 2014 subject to position clearance and availability of funds. The department is the premier urban planning program addressing issues in the Asia-Pacific region and Hawai‘i. The department is located on a campus with extensive academic resources related to the study of Asian and Pacific societies, and has strong affiliations with federally-funded research institutions such as the East-West Center and the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center.

Duties:

Teach graduate courses in an accredited planning program and the Disaster Management Humanitarian Assistance graduate certificate program, develop and conduct research related to urban planning and disaster risk reduction. Address current topics on climate adaptation, urban resilience, and sustainability. Support an extensive research program related to urban resilience in the Asia-Pacific region. Seek extramural funding. Supervise and advise graduate students, including those from Hawai’i, Asia-Pacific region and the U.S. Participate in and develop partnerships with local, national and international scholars and practitioners. Participate in departmental, university, and professional activities.

Minimum qualifications:

Ph.D. in urban and regional planning or closely related field from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalent (ABD will be considered). Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas of environmental planning: hazard mitigation, disaster recovery, natural resource management, coastal management, or climate change adaptation.

Desired qualifications:

Knowledge of disaster risk reduction programs, experience with GIS, mapping, and other tools relevant to planning practice, ability to work effectively with colleagues in cooperative, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors. Demonstrated ability to teach courses related to disaster management. Research, experience and commitment to work in Hawai‘i and the Asia-Pacific Region.
