Background

Save the Children Denmark (SCD) fights for children’s rights. They influence public opinion and support children at risk. Child Centred Disaster Risk Reduction (CCDRR) has been recently established by Save the Children Denmark in Ethiopia in response to the drought situation and there are plans to expand this concept throughout other Save the Children members. Therefore, there are many opportunities about developing the role of children in DRR integrated programmes and include activities which also consider Climate Change Adaptation.(CCA).

This position is likely to start in Nairobi with some travel to Ethiopia and then from April the post will mainly be based in Ethiopia. The time will be divided up so that approximately 80% will be used for working with Save the Children members and 20% focused on Save the Children Denmark activities.

Responsibilities

S/he will have the responsibility for advising Save the Children Denmark’s Disaster Risk Reduction work as well as other Save the Children members focusing on how children can be more involved throughout the DRR activities.

Manage and Facilitate Cooperative relationships

• Develop the coordination with other Save the Children organizations who are working in the region and expand networks with other agencies including the Government.

Fundraising

• Proactively explore and develop opportunities for fundraising for Child Centred DRR related work and strategic co-operation for Save the Children Denmark’s thematic main priorities (education, protection and Child Rights). Also guide other Save the Children Alliance members working within other sectors to develop fundraising opportunities within Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

• Participate in preparation of relevant project documents in connection with new initiatives and fundraising as well as participate in cross cutting work with developing systems for learning and exchange experience concerning the ongoing development of Save the Children

Regional Focal Point

• The CCDRR Adviser will be expected to give advice to DRR/CCA programmes in the region.

Monitoring

• Responsible for the monitoring and evaluating the DRR activities in the region according to Save the Children’s strategy and contracts.

Project Budgeting and Financial Reporting


• Advise on the implementation of Save the Children Denmark’s funds/supported projection in the region in close cooperation with national and local partners.

Requirements

Qualifications

• MA/MSC in Development, Disaster Management, Climate Change Adaptation, Environmental Studies, Social Science etc.
• Minimum 3 years relevant experience of working with an INGO
• Minimum two years experience in Disaster Risk Reduction and Child participation methodologies.
• Experience in running training programmes
• Previous experience in coordinating, implementing and managing programs at Head and Field Office
• Previous experience in fundraising with a proven track record
• Fluent in English

Competencies

• Project Management and implementation of projects related to DRR/CCA and child centred methodologies.
• Providing technical assistance on how to work incorporate meaningful child participation in DRR activities.
• Drafting Project applications
• Producing monitoring and evaluation reports and reporting to according to donor requirements
• Fundraising – demonstrated experience of successful fundraising and negotiations with donors and other financing partners, for example Danida EU/ECHO
• Demonstrated experience of capacity building of governmental and non-governmental organizations.
• Representation and active participation in high level national and regional donors
• Demonstrated negotiation competencies with national, regional and international partners
Personal competences
• Organized and systematic
• Strongly analytic and social engaged
• Can work independently and in teams
• Flexible and with good problem solving skills

Experience

• Experience from previous posting and/or similar work
• Ready to and experienced with travelling. A lot of travelling in Ethiopia and some to Kenya.
• Knowledge of civil society and partnerships in developing countries
• Knowledge of youth and education, protection and child rights based work in practice
• Experience of working in Africa and with knowledge of drought management.
• Good intercultural communication skills

Terms of employment

• The position starts from January/February 2012
