Summary:

The Climate and Resource Economist provides technical and scientific support to link economic studies to the conservation work that is happening on the ground in Papua New Guinea, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. The Economist will lead efforts to establish sustainable finance mechanisms at conservation sites.

Essential Functions:

The Economist conducts research and analyzes funding models, makes recommendations, and leads the efforts to implement sustainable finance plans. The Economist collaborates with the field staff, Conservancy senior management, and partner organizations to bring sophisticated business, financial, and economic expertise to the design and implementation of this initiative. The Economist will liaise with governments and outside entities on economic evaluation studies.

Responsibilities and Scope:

• Provide economic and technical expertise for linking ecological and economic strategies and data, including through advice related to setting up and using information from risk analysis, cost-benefit and economic valuation studies.
• Delivers tools, biodiversity data, field services and training to staff and partners, including policy makers at different governmental levels.
• May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Frequent travel and long hours.


Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduate Degree in related field and at least 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience collecting, processing, analyzing and interpreting scientific data.
• Experience with stakeholder engagement and natural resource management.
• Experience preparing reports of findings.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• Working experience in the region.
• Strong knowledge of computer technology and common software applications.
• Working experience in interdisciplinary teams.
• Experience with designing, implementing diverse projects, encompassing multiple programs and coordinating the work of other professionals, inside and outside the organization. Incorporates cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
• Adaptable to changing circumstances. Able to interpret guidelines, evaluate information, and modify workplans quickly and appropriately.
• Strong project management skills and ability to meet deadlines and to deliver high quality products.
• Ability to deliver practical, adaptable products and services and attention to detail.
