Help develop emergency and disaster management activities that address the needs of Filipinos with a hearing impairment or other disabilities.

This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative.

The Philippines experienced two major disasters late last year – the Bohol earthquake in October and typhoon Haiyan in November. These events have highlighted the need to develop disaster management activities and plans that are inclusive of people with disabilities.

Gualandi Volunteer Service Program is a non-government organisation that trains and recruits volunteers to assist with the delivery of services to the deaf community. It’s been working with the Local Government of San Remigio, Cebu on its Disaster Risk Management Program.

An Australian volunteer is being sought to assist Gualandi Volunteer Service Program and partner organisations with emergency recovery and rehabilitation activities. The volunteer will help to develop an Emergency Plan that is inclusive of people with a hearing impairment and other disabilities. They will also use the lessons learned from recent natural disasters to plan and develop assessment and advocacy materials, resources and training in disaster management.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience in project/program management
  • Experience in capacity strengthening and partnership building
  • Qualifications or training in disaster management
  • Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
