The impacts of climate change are rapidly becoming evident in Vanuatu. You can help the customs department develop procedures for responding to natural disasters, climate change refugees and changes to bio-security.

This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government, AusAID initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.

Background information
Customs and Inland Revenue is part of the national government, with responsibility for revenue collection and the maintenance of areas of national security, across Vanuatu’s 83 islands.

An Australian volunteer has been requested to support the department in strengthening its role in the event of a natural disaster and adapting to climate change.

The volunteer will help develop operational procedures in areas such as international aid policy in relation to customs, management of climate change refugees from other Pacific nations, changes to bio-security in relation to climate change and the effects of sea level on infrastructure.

The successful candidate will demonstrate
:

  • Experience in disaster management or climate change
  • Experience in a government department or in community development
  • Ability to manage diverse needs and expectations
  • Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience


To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years and over, Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens with Special Category Visas.
