Duties and responsibilities

The DanChurchAid/Christian Aid Joint Programme in Cambodia invites consultants with relevant experience to submit proposals for a contract to conduct research on disaster resilient livestock on behalf of the Dipecho Consortium in Cambodia entitled: Reducing Multi Hazard Induced Risks and Building Community Resilience to Disaster in Cambodia (ECHO/DIP/BUD/2010/01013).

The Consortium has been working on various aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), from July 2010 – September 30, 2011. Some of this work has included some initial work livelihoods including the provision of livestock. This has included the provision of ducks and chickens and the establishment of cow banks. The project is implemented by ActionAid Cambodia (AAC), Concern Worldwide (Concern), DanChurchAid (DCA) and their 10 implementing partners.

Although there has been significant research conducted on the suitability of various types of livestock for supplementing and supporting livelihoods, there has been little focus on the most effective type of livestock to raise in case of disaster in Cambodia (flood or drought). This study therefore seeks to analyse the livelihood options around the keeping of livestock to determine which one/s are most effective for enhancing coping strategies and building resilience, especially amongst the poorest households.

Requirements

- The Lead Consultant will be fluent in English language, would ideally have a relevant postgraduate qualification and extensive experience of livestock (both large and small) specifically in terms of designing, implementing small-scale household livestock distributions and/ or programming in Cambodia or South East Asia.
- The consultant should also have experience in socio-economic analysis and reviews in rural areas,
- Knowledge of livelihoods, gender and DRR and excellent analytical and writing skills in English and the ability to communicate at all levels.
- Knowledge of the Khmer language of at least one team member would be considered an asset.
