Work on the implementation of an early warning system that will give residents in Aklan province more time to reach safer ground and secure their property before a flood hits.

The province of Aklan, like many other parts of the Philippines, is prone to flooding. This has prompted the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to develop a local flooding early warning system that will give residents more time to prepare before a flood hits.

The system is a pro-active approach to disaster risk reduction and endeavours to empower local governments and communities in address flood disasters.

An Australian volunteer has been requested to work with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to support and build the capacity of local government units in Aklan in order to implement the last stage of the early warning system.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience training first responders in disaster (search & rescue techniques and equipment use)
  • Experience in mentoring or coaching
  • Qualifications in emergency/disaster management or community development
  • Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
