Background
The German Red Cross is part of a world wide community assisting victims of conflict, disaster and people affected by social or health-related crisis. The Red Cross movement provides vulnerable people with assistance exclusive of discrimination of nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions and adheres to the seven principles of the Red Cross movement: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. The German Red Cross intervenes in disaster response and rehabilitation, health, social and environmental as well as capacity building projects in cooperation with international sister organisations within the movement.
The International Cooperation Department of the German Red Cross is looking for delegate to implement a project in the area of disaster risk reduction in Mozambique in collaboration with the national Red Cross Society starting from 15th September or 1stOctober 2009 for a duration of 6 months.
Task acquired
In close collaboration with our national partner, the Red Cross Society the tasks are:
- Manage the appropriate implementation of the disaster risk reduction project targeting rural communities in the province of Zambezia (financed by German Federal Foreign Office).
The project activities are:
- Disaster prevention on community level
- Training of the communities for possible natural disaster such as cyclone and tsunamis
- Awareness raising in the communities
- Build up the capacity of the local Red Cross Partner and cooperate with the government and other partners
- Ensure the ownership of the local project team for the project implementation
- Ensure active involvement of the community in the project
- Produce adequate monitoring and project reports together with the project staff
- Carry out close financial management and budget control
- Build up the capacity of the local partner in programme and finance management
- Handing over the project implementation to the local partner after 6 months
We are looking for
- Geographer, rural development specialist or agronomist
- Experience in disaster risk reduction or emergency projects
- Minimum of 2-3 years working experience in the development or emergency context
- Knowledge in financial and administrative project management
- Strong project management skills, including financial management
- Ability to train and guide local community volunteers and the project team in a participatory way
- Knowledge of Red Cross/ Red Crescent principles and willingness to adhere to them
- Readiness to go on assignment without partner / family posting
- Fluency in Portuguese, English and German are needed
- Intercultural sensitivity
- Certified ability to work under tropical conditions (medical check)
