Help Mongolians to protect themselves from the worst impacts of a natural disaster by developing community-appropriate preparedness plans.

This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.

Experts are carefully monitoring the number and severity of earthquakes and tremors in Mongolia. When these occur, UNICEF plays a lead role in responding, addressing water, nutrition, education, logistics, telecommunications and child protection needs.

An AVID volunteer is being sought to help build community awareness in each of these areas, and engage community members in preparedness and response activities.

The volunteer will help develop community mobilisation and emergency support strategies, and work with local counterparts to improve community awareness and message distribution.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:
•Experience in engaging the community in disaster preparedness
• Experience developing disaster risk reduction activities
• Specialist training in humanitarian assistance, community development or social sciences
• Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
