Are you ready for anything? Help establish a 24-hour disaster emergency centre and telephone hotline in the Philippines province of Aklan.

This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in the Philippines province of Aklan plays a major role in building the disaster resilience of communities, as well as implementing disaster risk reduction measures, enhancing disaster preparedness and improving response capabilities.

The office is undergoing a major transformation from a small organisation with six staff to a 24-hour emergency operations centre with 33 staff that will be able to better respond to disasters when they occur.

An AVID volunteer is being sought to help establish this emergency centre, as well as the 24-hour emergency hotline. The volunteer will also support staff to create a strategy that will guide agencies in their role in an emergency and help implement the province's Flood Early Warning System.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience in emergency management, preferably in an organisation linked to an emergency operations centre
  • Experience in developing action plans and strategies at community level
  • Qualifications or experience in emergency/disaster management or a related field
  • Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
