Job Description




Emergencies impact all 31 countries in which ChildFund International works. The Emergency Preparedness and DRR Advisor plays a crucial role in ensuring that the needs and rights of children are recognized and addressed in the international response to these emergencies. This Advisor within ChildFund will interact with and integrate the efforts of many units within the organization including Program Development, Grants Acquisition and Management, Fundraising and Communications.

The Emergency Preparedness and DRR Advisor is responsible for the implementation of ChildFund’s Emergency Response Policy and Procedure and supports the development of high quality preparedness and response plans. S/he facilitates the integration of DRR strategies into planning processes and collaborates with alliance members through the ChildFund Alliance Humanitarian Assistance Communication Unit (HACU). S/he backstops declared emergency responses and ensures the adherence to international standards.



Duties/responsibilities


  • Oversees National Office implementation of the Emergency Response Policy and Procedure

  • Ensures that ChildFund emergency response and DRR activities are in accordance with international standards, principles, conventions and guidelines such as Sphere, Hyogo Framework (HFA), Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) measures, Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) etc.

  • Facilitates integration of DRR strategies into Country and Area Strategic Plans

  • Strengthens National Office capacity for Emergency Response and DRR

  • Coordinates the development of high quality preparedness plans and Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation plans

  • Collaborates and coordinates with other units within ChildFund International

  • Supports the ChildFund Alliance through sharing and learning

  • Provides rapid and regular communication and information sharing among Alliance members during disasters

  • Establishes a database of ChildFund International Emergency Response activities and provides regular updates on on-going interventions 


  • Qualifications/experience



    Required

    • Master’s degree in International development, or Program Management or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline closely related and with equivalent relevant work experience

    • 5 - 7 years of experience working internationally (Africa, Asia and the Americas) with an international or local NGO, in the areas of DRR, Emergency Preparedness and Response and Child Protection or a related role

    • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, including the ability to build relationships across units, cultures and organizations

    • Experience facilitating workshops and training programs

    • Familiarity with international standards, principles, conventions, guidelines and frameworks such as Sphere, Hyogo Framework (HFA) Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) measures, Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) etc.

    • Ability to work under pressure with high emotional stamina

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including well developed report writing

    • International and US travel (with short notice)
    • Preferred

    •  Familiarity with child-focused programming

    • Demonstrated professional proficiency in English and either French or Spanish

    • Strong computer skills, particularly MS Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

    • A self-starter with excellent presentation skills, ability to multi-task in a dynamic and supportive team environment
