The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of the Philippines' Aklan province plays a major role in building the disaster resilience of communities, as well as implementing disaster risk reduction measures, enhancing disaster preparedness and improving response capabilities.
This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.
The organisation wishes to develop a database combining all information related to disaster risk reduction. This will enable staff to map vulnerable communities, provide details of skilled personnel and rescue equipment in the province of Aklan, and more efficiently communicate disaster warnings.
An AVID volunteer is being sought to help establish this database, conduct orientation and training for staff and prepare relevant manuals. The volunteer will also assist with the creation of a GIS-enhanced Provincial Statistical Database that will be critical to physical planning, project development and evaluation, monitoring and decision-making in relation to disaster management.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience and relevant qualifications in GIS and database management
- Experience in organisational development and enhancing institutional capacity, preferably in the field of emergency services
- Qualifications or relevant experience in information technology, computer engineering, GIS, management information systems or a related field
- Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
