The role, which will be based in the East Grinstead office, will be working as a member of the Flood Risk and Water Management Team, who are engaged in a wide range of flood risk and water related projects for a variety of clients. As one of the Environment Agency Framework Consultants, Capita is routinely employed on projects consisting of river, coastal and surface water modelling and mapping, hazard mapping, hydrology, flood forecasting, catchment management, water level management, flood mitigation works and emergency planning. The role involves building and calibrating hydraulic river models, including flood forecasting models. Standard modelling software Capita currently tends to use includes ISIS, Tuflow, HEC-RAS, and RainTrack.

Reporting to the Flood Risk and Water Management team leader, the successful candidate will work closely with project managers of the projects they are working on. Day-to-day support and guidance will tend to be on a project basis.

• To develop hydraulic models and contribute to other water related disciplines as required.
• To contribute to development of Flood Risk Management studies and solutions
• To deliver high quality technical work,
• To deliver their work in an efficient and effective manner which helps keep projects on time and on budget.

Essential experience/skills


• A good degree (min 2:2) in an appropriate subject (Engineering, Maths, Science , Physical Geography, Geology, Environmental Management or GIS)
• Experience of building, troubleshooting and calibrating ISIS, ISIS-TUFLOW and TUFLOW models.
• Demonstrable technical skills (assessed through a practical test)
• Fluent written and spoken English
• Must be prepared to work flexibly and to travel within the UK at short notice, and abroad if required

Desired experience/skills

• Modelling experience.
• Experience of delivering models to the Environment Agency SFRM2, or SEPA specification.
• GIS mapping skills (ARC or MapInfo)
• An MSc or PhD relevant to the role.
• UK Driving licence

• Must be able to work effectively within a team environment and deliver high quality technical work to a defined budget.
• Will receive formal as well as on-the-job training and support, with guidance provided by senior members of staff in specialist areas. However, the applicant must demonstrate a proficiency in numerical, scientific or logic based disciplines with an aptitude for hydraulic modelling.
