Background and context

Established in 1986, The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is an independent, non-governmental organization that serves as a leading regional, technical point for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the Asian Pacific region. With headquarters located in Bangkok, Thailand, ADPC has country offices in Bangladesh, Lao PDR and Myanmar. ADPC's well-established networks with government line agencies and strong partnerships with regional organizations and development agencies provide the foundation for its work. ADPC’s approach is to focus on:

  • Science to enhance the capacity of countries in the utilization of SCIENCE based data and information to understand risk and make informed, evidence-based decisions;
  • Systems for effective management of risk at all levels in countries; and
  • Applications to address risk management measures for more resilient, sustainable development.

The ADPC is the host institution for SERVIR Mekong, the regional hub of the global SERVIR program, a partnership program of the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) and NASA (the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The goal of SERVIR Mekong is to enhance climate change adaptation and environmental management in the Lower Mekong Subregion through the increased application of geospatial information in policy formulation, planning, and other decision-making contexts.

Objectives

Reference data is an important input for land cover classification systems. Reference data can be collected in the field or from high-resolution satellite imagery. ADPC helped develop the reference data collection system Collect Earth Online together with the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Responsibilities

  • Develop a reference data collection protocol
  • Create projects for reference data collection
  • Organize a workshop on reference data collection
  • Prepare a report and presentation on reference data collection

Requirements

  • Background in Geo-Information Science
  • Background in Remote sensing
  • Strong English writing and communications skills
  • Enthusiastic team player and collaborator

Duration of assignment

The assignment shall be 3-6 months intermittently, starting when both parties sign agreed terms.

Supervised by: Manager and Director, GEO

Deliverables and payment schedule

The intern should submit monthly timesheets in respective months for formal approval from the director of Geospatial Informatics Department.

Total cost: A lump sum allowance of THB 10,000 per month for international citizens and of THB 6,000 per month for Thai citizens.

Travel costs and others: If as part of a work assignment travel is in Thailand or other countries in the region, all related expenses will be borne by ADPC such as: international travel (economy air ticket), Per Diem, accommodation and local transportation.
