About Asian Disaster Preparedness Center

ADPC is an intergovernmental regional organization with a vision to reduce disaster and climate risk impacts on communities and countries in Asia and the Pacific by working with governments, development partners, international organizations, NGOs, civil society, private sector, media, and other key stakeholders. 

Established in 1986 as a technical capacity building center, ADPC has grown and diversified its expertise across social and physical sciences to support sustainable solutions for risk reduction across a broad range of specialist areas. With over 100 staff from 19 different nationalities and a wide range of professional expertise from atmospheric scientists to social scientists with experiences from all levels of engagement typically required for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Resilience (CR) in an effective manner. ADPC is a competent regional resource center and has seven thematic departments: ADPC Academy, Risk Governance, Climate Resilience, Urban Resilience, Health Risk Management, Preparedness for Response and Recovery, Geospatial Information. These are supported by the Finance, the Human Resources and Administration, and the Strategic Planning departments. In addition to the departments, ADPC works on three cross-cutting themes: Gender and Diversity, Poverty and Livelihoods, and Regional and Transboundary Cooperation through permanent working committees. 

ADPC Strategy 2020 guides the organization in providing comprehensive risk reduction support to countries and communities in Asia and the Pacific. ADPC recognizes the importance of examining the linkages between disaster risk management, poverty reduction, gender equality, sustainability, rights-based approaches, climate change, and regional cooperation. 

ADPC takes various levels of actions in a close connection with the national, regional and global frameworks including; e.g. ASEAN, SAARC, MRC, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR), the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the New Urban Agenda, and the World Humanitarian Summit, etc.

Statement of intent

The Intern will be a part of ADPC’s thematic department of Risk Governance and involve in research support on a broad range of topics with a focus on gender in DRR.

Required qualifications

  • Minimum a bachelor’s degree/certificate in development studies, social sciences, gender studies, disaster risk management, economics, public policy, or any other related fields 
  • Possess an intermediate level of technical understanding on gender, gender & DRR in Asia- Pacific region, and integrating gender equality & women empowerment into DRR
  • Strong analytical skills in conducting research with excellent report writing and documentation   
  • Full professional proficiency in spoken and written English 
  • Willingness to work in a team, respect the importance of other disciplines and keen to learn from and contribute to various disciplines.

General conditions

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide research assistance including data collection, literature review, information gathering and analysis on gender and DRR, gender equality and women empowerment in DRR and other relevant thematic scopes; 
  • Assist Risk Governance team in developing technical reports and documents on gender and DRR and other relevant thematic scopes;
  • Provide support in compiling background information and developing briefing notes, session contents and presentations on gender and DRR for stakeholder consultations, meetings, workshops, and other activities; 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
