Job Purpose
Support the work of the UNESCO’s Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-Hazards Risk Reduction in the field of disaster risk reduction. Engage in technical and logistical dialogue with related sectors in UNESCO and other organizations to build synergies and partnerships on disaster risk reduction initiatives. Contribute to the development, implementation and administration of the Section’s projects and programmes.
Responsibilities
● Provide support to the Section on its school safety-related activities (i.e. GADRRRES, VISUS)
● Participate in the implementation of the ongoing DRR projects on resilient infrastructure in Latin American Caribbean countries
● provide support to the Section on its activities relating to early warning systems (earthquake) and ICT (such as AI).
● Contribute to policy analysis and data collection/analysis within the framework of the Section’s projects on geo-hazard risk reduction.
● Assist in drafting project proposals, project reports, brochures, and training materials for the activities implemented by the Section, as required.
● Assist in the preparation of Section’s meetings, workshops, conferences and other events, as required
● Get acquainted with the work of UNESCO and perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
● Being currently enrolled or have recently completed a Master's Degree or equivalent in disaster risk management, civil/environmental engineering, environmental science, natural sciences, geography, architecture, or other related fields. Previous work experience in the field of disaster risk reduction will be an asset.
● Fluency in English and Spanish (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is an asset.
● Knowledge in graphic design (e.g. Photoshop/Illustrator) and GIS (e.g. QGIS) are an asset.
Period
Up to six months, starting date: as soon as possible, latest in January 2021.
Working Section
The Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-Hazards Risk Reduction (SC/EES/EGR), Natural Sciences Sector, UNESCO. The candidate will be supervised by Mr Soichiro Yasukawa, Programme Specialist, SC/EES/EGR, at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, France.
Remuneration
Kindly note that internships at UNESCO are unpaid.

Learning objective
The intern will acquire experience on how UNESCO n makes decisions and implements projects internally and externally by supporting programme specialists both on logistics and substance.
At the same time, the intern will broaden his/her knowledge on DRR and other domains in which UNESCO is engaged by interacting with programme specialists.
