Job purpose

Support the work of UNESCO’s Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-Hazards Risk Reduction. Contribute to the development, implementation and administration of the Section’s projects and programmes, with a focus on UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Responsibilities

  • Update and improve the GIS database of the UNESCO Global Geoparks, extract valuable geographical data from this database and explore the possibilities of making it open access and interactive.
  • Assist in developing the data framework and type of data that will be collected.
  • Collect data about UNESCO Global Geoparks, by extracting it from documents and files available at UNESCO premises or by consulting partners (i.e. UNESCO Global Geoparks).
  • Assist in developing a database that incorporates both the GIS database and other types of data files.
  • Create visual representations (graphs, maps, ...) of the collected data for presentations, brochures and other publications.
  • Contribute substantively to data analysis within the framework of the Section’s projects on earth sciences and geo-hazard risk reduction.
  • Compare the UNESCO Global Geopark data set, with other data sets available.
  • Assist in drafting brochures by the Section as required.
  • Contribute to the preparation of inputs for meetings and workshops.
  • Get acquainted with the work of UNESCO and perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled or having recently completed a Master's Degree or equivalent in natural sciences, environmental sciences, geography, geology, geophysics, glaciology, soil science, architecture, civil/environmental engineering or other related fields.
  • Active GIS knowledge and expertise.
  • Knowledge about database management systems
  • Excellent research and drafting skills required, plus an interest in the subject.
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other working language of UNESCO’s headquarters (French) is desirable.
  • Open to either sex
  • Must be able to legally reside in Paris for the duration of the internship.
  • Must be able to financially support him/herself for the duration of the internship as UNESCO internships are unpaid.

Period

Up to six months. Starting date: to be agreed upon (as soon as possible).
