Position Summary
R3ADY Asia-Pacific (R3ADY) is a dynamic start-up initiative that is emerging as a leader in enhancing multi-sectoral relationships to advance disaster risk reduction and resilience. R3ADY’s mission is to build resilient communities and economies through strategic and innovative partnerships. R3ADY was launched in 2011 at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Honolulu, Hawaii by a group of American institutions, including the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Chevron, the University of Hawai’i, the U.S.-Japan Council, and several U.S. government agencies, including USAID, FEMA, NOAA, the Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. PACOM.

Over the last two years, R3ADY has successfully convened diverse organizations, conducted knowledge-building activities, and implemented innovative pilot projects with partners in Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and the Philippines.

R3ADY is now seeking a Managing Director who will build on our recent programmatic successes and lead the implementation of our operational plan to build a sustainable resource base and operable business model for the organization. The Managing Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for R3ADY’s staff, programs, and expansion and execution of its mission. The Managing Director will work in close collaboration with R3ADY’s Executive Committee.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

Fund Development

  • Primarily responsible for managing and raising revenue from all relevant sources.
  • Prepare and manage grant proposals, budgets, and all reporting.
  • Create a fund development strategy with a sustainable resource model, including long-term funding streams with a diversity of revenue types.
  • Meet or exceed fund development goals, ensuring adequate funds to fulfill operational and strategic plans.
  • Program Development and Implementation
  • Identify and design strategic programmatic opportunities to advance R3ADY’s mission and unique value proposition.
  • Align the interests, capabilities, and resources of diverse internal and external stakeholders to move project concepts to implementation.
  • Oversee implementation of projects through contract and relationship management in the Asia-Pacific region.

Communications and Outreach

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for R3ADY at speaking engagements, conferences, and other public relations opportunities.
  • Oversee the development of a communications strategy for R3ADY, which identifies effective communications channels, techniques and tools for internal and external audiences.
  • Maintain positive working relationships and regular communications with broad and diverse government, nonprofit, business and academic partners across the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Identify high-level strategic partnerships with international and national players to determine opportunities to align and leverage resources, capabilities, and activities.
  • Manage external and internal communications, including op-eds, statements, social media, and newsletter
  • Governance and Strategic Planning
  • Maintain regular communications with Advisory Council members and committees, including facilitation of conference calls and in-person meetings, email updates, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Work closely with the Executive Committee to lead the transition of R3ADY as a fiscally-sponsored initiative to an incorporated nonprofit, with particular attention to board development and organizational structure.
  • Lead the development of a 3-year strategic plan in collaboration with the Advisory Council.
  • Provide leadership in developing and scaling programs, ensuring operational and financial plans keep pace.

Administration, Financial and Human Resource Management

  • Manage R3ADY’s resources and capabilities strategically to ensure effective implementation of projects.
  • Responsible for fiscal management and integrity of the project, including overseeing budget development and management.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations in coordination with the New Venture Fund, including all financial and human resource matters.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Deep knowledge of R3ADY’s mission and issue area.
  • Minimum eight years of experience in a related field, preferably nonprofit organizational development, fund development or international development, including proven success in developing major partnerships between diverse organizations.
  • Minimum five years of successful grant-writing experience.
  • Commitment to transparency and open communication.
  • Ability to travel 30 -50% of time.

Valued and Non-Essential Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Advanced degree highly preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in large, complex and dynamic organization balancing competing priorities.
  • Strong leadership skills and track record resolving conflicts.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build consensus and cohesion.
  • Proven experience and success in managing staff and contractors, including remotely.
