Background

The Meteorological Services Division (MSD) of the National Environment Agency (NEA) is the national meteorological authority of Singapore for weather forecasting and warning services and climate information. With a vision to be an enterprising meteorological centre of excellence, MSD is expanding its capacity to enhance its multi-hazard warning services and building up its expertise in Climate Science.

The Operational Services Department (OSD) in MSD provides critical weather information, forecasts, warnings and consultancy services to a wide range of customers. To deal with increasing threats of environmental and geological hazards, OSD is enhancing its multi-hazard warning services.

OSD is seeking qualified and experienced Meteorologists to join a team of Meteorological Officers. They will provide advisories, early warnings and alerts of meteorological, environmental and geological hazards to the general public and key customers such as the civil aviation sector. OSD is equipped with computer weather prediction models and advanced weather monitoring tools such as doppler radar, satellite reception systems and wind profiler to support forecasting operations. Officers will conduct studies on weather patterns and trends; and develop forecasting guides. Officers will also mentor and train junior Meteorological Officers; and handle projects related to weather observations and forecasting. Officers will have opportunities to participate in international conferences and seminars.

Meteorological Officers should possess the following qualifications and criteria:

* At least a 2nd Upper Honours Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology or Engineering.
* At least 5 years experience in operational weather forecasting.
* A good command of spoken and written English and excellent communication skills.
* Able to perform shift work including on weekends and public holidays.
* Good knowledge in Information Technology and some experience in weather or climate research will be an advantage.
* Experience in scientific programming, including scripting languages in Unix/Linux environment is preferred.

After a stint in OSD, Officers may also pursue other areas such as climate and weather research in the Climate Science Department where they may be offered a postgraduate scholarship in Climate Science or related studies.
