The Met Office has published three calls for competition for a DFID-funded WISER (Weather & Climate Information Services for Africa) project. Funds are available for the following opportunities:

1. Support to ICPAC to develop communications strategy

This project aims to support ICPAC to develop their communications strategy and forms part of an initiative jointly funded with NORCAP. NORCAP will fund one individual for this assignment. WISER will fund additional inputs to ensure focus and bring innovative thinking around communications, marketing and branding aspects.

Further details including how to submit a proposal can be found in the terms of reference.

2. Decision Making in the Face of Rainfall Uncertainty

This study aims to develop how DFID advisory staff (and possibly other organisations) in the Sahel region might use weather and climate science, information and forecasts better in their decision making at the seasonal-decadal year timescale. The work will be undertaken in two stages. Stage 1 will review the science and techniques for decision making under uncertainty relevant to priority decisions in the Sahel generally. Stage 2 will investigate the approaches in more detail and design bespoke tools to enable this to happen through a case study type approach.

Further details including how to submit a proposal can be found in the terms of reference.

3. Think Piece on Low Cost Weather Observations in Africa

This study aims to provide initial thinking to DFID on potential future investments in low cost observations in Africa - and particularly to investigate the possible different business models that could revolutionise long-term, sustainable weather observations across Africa.

Further details including how to submit a proposal can be found in the terms of reference.

WISER

WISER is funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID). The WISER programme's mission is to deliver transformational change in the quality, accessibility and use of weather and climate information services at all levels of decision-making for sustainable development in Africa. WISER will:

  • Focus on service delivery, directed by user needs, which support poverty reduction and development;
  • Work holistically to inform climate risk decision making bringing together research, policy and practice;
  • Work with regional, national or sub-national plans, which have involved users; and
  • Work through existing and mandated organisations and channels where possible and appropriate.

The Met Office acts as Fund Manager for the East Africa part of WISER, including the provision of technical leadership, future programme development, programme oversight and by managing sub-grants of funds.
