Background

The University of Gävle offers a position for post-graduate studies in the field of Computer Science/Geoinformatics at the Faculty of Engineering and Sustainable Development.

This PhD student project aims at developing efficient computerized methods to model, analyze and interactively visualize flood inundation risks. Hydraulic and geographical information techniques will be used to predict both flood inundation extents and their corresponding accuracies. The interpretation of the results of these models poses several challenges to the human decision maker as it requires the comprehension of spatial, temporal and uncertainty aspects. Another goal of the project is therefore to develop novel interactive visualization techniques (both 2D and 3D) for better understanding of the problems to be analyzed and to enhance communication among decision makers. Usability evaluations of flood risk visualizations are going to be a vital part of this project. The project is an interdisciplinary initiative of the subjects Computer Science and Geomatics at the University of Gävle.

The work will primarily house research and postgraduate education and some teaching and administration are also included in these positions.

A PhD position in Sweden is one year with an intention of an annual prolongation of maximum five years in total for a PhD degree. The position is in Gävle and full time.

The salary is governed by local agreement concerning graduate students.

Qualifications

The position requires a MSc degree (or Swedish Magister) or equivalent in Geomatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other closely related area.

The university seeks a highly motivated candidate with a keen interest in spatial modeling, visualization, human-computer interaction and user driven graphical application development. Fluency in spoken English and excellent English writing skills are required. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter are needed along with the ability to formulate and carry out research tasks independently. Previous teaching experiences are meriting. Prospective candidates should have generally strong mathematical and programming skills and good knowledge of computer graphics. Documented competences in one or more of the following areas are of specific relevance for this position:

• Experience with spatial databases
• Advanced use of geographical information systems for environmental and spatial modeling
• Hydraulic modeling
• Application development in graphics and image analysis
• Advanced use of 3D visualization tools

Swedish legislation related to post graduate studies can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100), see Chapter 5

The university pursues ethnic and cultural diversity and gender balance in all categories of staff. Since the majority of present personnel are male, applications from female candidates are welcom.
