Program officer - Disaster management

The AVID volunteer will support the disaster management coordinator and disaster management staff to plan and organise disaster preparedness and risk reduction activities, including revising standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the disaster management plan (DMP). The volunteer will work with the disaster management team to enhance the training content for disaster management volunteers, strengthen information management during response, and assist the team to plan and implement projects.

This assignment follows on from a similar assignment during 2011-2012. The work plan of this role is based on supporting the disaster management team to implement the lessons learned and outcomes of the review conducted in 2012 by a previous volunteer.

The key expected outputs of this assignment are:

• Standard operating procedures and disaster management plan developed and accessible to all levels of Fiji Red Cross Society
• Training on standard operating procedures and disaster management plan imbedded into everyday business
• Project management and annual planning is enhanced; including budgets, log-frames and implementation design
• Branch capacity is enhanced to meet the needs of communities affected by disasters

• Demonstrated experience in program planning and implementation
• At least two years experience in the humanitarian sector and/or the Pacific

Qualifications

Qualifications in disaster management, emergency preparedness, program management or a related field.

Language skills and level required

Fijian and/or Hindi would be beneficial

• First aid certificate
• Previous Red Cross experience and an understanding of, and commitment to, Red Cross Fundamental Principles
• Experience working with volunteers
