Each year, the hurricane season rips through the Caribbean. Some years are more destructive than others, but here at Oxfam we’re always on hand to offer relief and support to those who need it most. But the work we do is not simply about stepping in when disaster strikes. Our longer term development programmes and Disaster Risk Reduction projects are designed to make sure communities are better prepared if the worst happens again.

The role

In this key role, you’ll be managing Oxfam’s DIPECHO disaster preparedness project across the region. A project to promote the integration of Disaster Risk Reduction into urban planning and rural livelihood programmes. The diverse nature of the role means that each day will present its own unique challenges. One day, you could be involved in traditional field work with local communities or delivering learning programmes to your team. The next day, developing relationships and strategic plans with our regional partners and international donors. And at every stage, of course, you’ll need to ensure the work we do ties in with Oxfam’s broader development efforts.

What we’re looking for

An inspirational leader and a keen negotiator with a flair for developing and managing relationships, you’ll need considerable humanitarian experience, specifically in Disaster Risk Reduction. The chances are you’ll come to us from a similar project management role. But whatever your background, you’ll need practical experience of working with, and managing consultants. And the kind of authority that will enable you to influence people and mobilise resources both within and outside Oxfam. A broad understanding of gender issues and cultural sensitivity are essential. And from a practical standpoint you must be fluent in English and, ideally, French.

About Oxfam

A simple, inescapable truth underlines everything we do at Oxfam. There’s enough wealth in this world to go around. It’s not unfortunate that people live in poverty. It’s unjustifiable. It’s not their problem. It’s ours too. And with the right support, we can beat poverty and injustice. Thousands of people already commit their time and talents to our campaigning, humanitarian and long-term development projects. Now we’re looking for yours.
