The German Red Cross (GRC) is part of a worldwide community assisting victims of conflicts and disasters and people affected by social or health related crises.
The Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement provides vulnerable people with assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. The German Red Cross assists in disaster response, rehabilitation and capacity building projects internationally on appeals of their sister organisations within the Movement.

GRC is currently seeking an experienced Project Manager in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction for two projects in Honduras and Peru.

Both are community based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) projects in flood prone areas. In Honduras the project is located in 12 communities along the river Chamelecón basin in the municipality of Puerto Cortéz. In Peru the project is benefitting 30 indigenous communities along the river Ucayali. The main components are: strengthening capacities of communities in disaster preparedness and response, organize schools in disaster preparedness and response, implement small-scale disaster mitigation projects, organize awareness raising campaigns about natural hazards, establishment of an early warning system and coordination of the project activities with relevant authorities. The projects will be executed through the National Red Cross Societies of Honduras and Peru.

The Project Manager will be required to travel regularly between the two project regions with stopovers for briefings and reporting in the GRC office in Lima, Peru.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Assist and advise the two National Red Cross Societies in the proper implementation of all relevant DRR project activities
  • Ensure the proper compliance with all relevant administrative requirements according to applicable financial and administrative regulations as stipulated by the donor and the GRC
  • Keep a close and constant follow-up to all aspects related to the management of funds and budget control, purchases and documentation
  • Keep a close coordination with and provide constant feedback to the regional GRC office in Lima
  • Network / liaise for the GRC in Honduras and Central America with the Red Cross Honduras and other partners in the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement, the ECHO regional office in Nicaragua, national authorities, international and national organizations in coordination with the GRC regional office in Lima in order to identify/discuss new project possibilities and funding opportunities

Required Skills:

  • 3-5 years of experience in community based DRR
  • Project management skills (e.g. PCM)
  • Experience in an advisory role and coaching
  • Professional field experience in Latin America
  • Knowledge of donor organisations and their policies in Central America
  • Readiness to work in remote areas (very remote in the case of Peru)
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability and agreement to adhere to the Red Cross Red Crescent Fundamental Principles
  • Readiness to go on assignment without partner
  • Oral and written fluency in Spanish and English, German is of advantage
  • Ability to work effectively in multi cultural environments
  • Excellent physical and mental health with the ability to complete a thorough medical screening process

GRC offers you a compensation package according to the collective employment agreement of the GRC as well as an expatriation allowance during your mission. Depending on the post specific situation we either provide you with an accommodation or a personal allowance to cover your accommodation. In addition to a full insurance package (health insurance for residence abroad, private accident insurance, private liability insurance, luggage insurance) GRC is as well covering a home flight withing a 12-month period of assignment and medical check ups before and after your mission. Before your assignment you will benefit from a comprehensive training package and receive briefings prior as well as during and after your mission.
