About the Role

Disaster preparedness

- Responsible for overseeing and supporting the implementation of the DRM strategy in 12/14 country offices
- Establish and promoting the DRM focal point network with a clear active role
- Support the disaster preparedness process across the region. (coordinating the implementation of disaster prep process and supporting the use of the disaster prep assessment tool)
- Document the disaster preparedness processes and learning from the countries and share within the region and International Headquarters to further refine the training tools/procedures
- Establish peer support processes and inter-country collaboration between countries in the region.

Disaster response

- Be deployed to manage emergency programmes at the first stage of any large scale emergency. Will be able to support orange and red level. (medium and large emergency scale)
- When not required as emergency programme manager, support and advise country and regional staff involved in an emergency.
- The RHM will establish a peer support process within the region (orange and red level).
- Jointly with the country directors, regional offices and international headquarters the RHM will identify additional capacity needs and coordinate rapid deployment of additional staff (admin, finance, HR, programme, comms etc.) as required
- Support countries in undertaking review and documentation of lessons from all significant disasters, including supporting post disaster reflection workshops.

About You

- Documented experience from disaster risk management work, including disaster preparedness and managing response programmes.
- Documented experience from several major disaster risk events, working in “disaster/high risk” environments.
- Documented experience as a trainer/facilitator on humanitarian issues would be desirable
- Ability to prioritise and manage complex and varies workload, often to tight deadlines.
- Experience of strategy, i.e. analysing relevant factors from both the internal and external environments, identifying crucial issues that have to be addressed, setting objectives and developing plans of actions; analysis.
- Excellent communications sills, written and verbal in order to present arguments clearly and powerfully to a variety of audiences;
- Experience of working with institutional donors/fundraising.
- Energetic and motivated individual, with proven track record of undertaking similar assignments successfully
- Good interpersonally skills and able to work in a dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders at different levels.
- Ability to think strategically, but also result orientated and get things done.
- Commitment to continuous learning and willingness to keep abreast of new developments in the field (DRM and humanitarian issues I general)
- Able to work independently, but to function within a virtual team.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and sustain good working relations with colleagues
- Culturally and socially sensitive, and able to work successfully with partners and sector professionals.

Location

This post is expected to be based at Plan’s West Africa regional offices.

Travel


This position entails 50-60% travel both within and outside region.
