The Environment Division of Baastel has become a major player in environment consulting, with internationally recognised competences in the fields of climate change adaptation and mitigation in developing countries, biodiversity conservation and protected areas management, agriculture (especially in relation to climate change), sustainable water and land management, energy efficiency, early warning systems and disaster risk management.

Baastel is looking for an Intermediate/Senior-Level Expert in Environmental Economics applied to developing country contexts for a full-time position.

Responsibilities and tasks:

  • Perform intermediate or senior-level consulting services on multiple and often simultaneous mandates in the fields of environmental economics, climate finance, conservation finance and other related topics in developing countries;
  • Act as senior staff or team leader on various consultancy assignments;
  • Participate in or lead field missions on specific mandates;
  • Ensure budgetary and quality control on assignments;
  • Manage and train intermediate and junior staff as part of these consultancy assignments;
  • Participate in the development of business opportunities for Baastel in the field of environment and development, and climate change in particular;
  • Develop and manage client and contractual relationships with sub-contractors and client base;
  • Support efficient and effective organization and utilization of teams on the various mandates, in conjunction with the President and Head of the Environment Division;
  • Ensure the excellence of services provided and contribute to developing and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise within Baastel in its fields of activities.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Economics, Environmental Finance or related fields;
  • At least ten years of work experience in environmental economics, climate finance and/or conservation finance in developing country contexts;
  • In-depth knowledge of climate finance, including carbon finance, CDM, REDD, UNFCCC financial mechanisms;
  • Knowledge of conservation finance mechanisms such as CTF, PES and other innovative financial mechanisms is an asset;
  • Familiarity with environmental economic modelling tools, including econometrics, statistics, quantitative and qualitative analysis, economic analysis, dynamic models, etc.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation is highly desirable; knowledge of Results-Based Management and of participatory approaches is an asset;
  • Experience in project design and implementation is an asset;
  • In-depth knowledge of multilateral environmental agreements and their implementation in a developing country context;
  • Fieldwork experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and/or Latin America;
  • Extensive knowledge of the major bilateral and multilateral donors and proven track record working with them;
  • Excellent English writing and presentation skills; Knowledge of other languages (especially French or Spanish) will be considered an asset;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience managing a team;
  • Capacity to perform under pressure;
  • Willingness to travel extensively;
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills;
  • Great capacity to listen, respect other’s opinions and build consensus in diverse and multicultural settings;
  • Demonstrates initiative, leadership, ability to delegate and to work as part of a team;
  • Willingness to commit and grow with a small but very dynamic organisation;
  • Commitment to an integrated/sustainable development approach to development cooperation.

Reporting relationship: The Expert will report to the President and Head of the Environment Division.
