Justification for the request

Climate Consultant to work with the Climate Coordinator in the GEO Secretariat on GEO’s climate action engagement priority and dedicated deliverables and eventsthroughout 2021 leading to COP26.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Secretariat is looking for a Climate Consultant to support their team in Geneva at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Reporting to the Climate Coordinator, the Consultant will primarily be responsible for assisting with targeted tasks around GEO’s climate action engagement priority and the GEO Climate Change Working Group, including the planning and execution of the second GEO Climate Workshop scheduled for September 2021, and GEO events throughout 2021 leading up to the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) scheduled for 1-12 November 2021.

Duties will include

  • Assisting with the organization of GEO Climate Change Working Group online meetings;
  • Assisting with the organization of the second GEO Climate Workshop;
  • Assisting with the organization of dedicated COP26 side events on the use of Earth observations in support of climate action with GEO members and participating organizations;
  • Assisting with the organization of a campaign of virtual events to promote the use of Earth observations in support of public and private financial investments in climate resilience and adaptation;
  • Assisting with engaging with relevant partners in the international climate policy domain, including the UNFCCC, as well as in the international climate finance domain, including the Green Climate Fund;
  • Researching and producing a mapping of existing remote sensing technologies for greenhouse gas monitoring across the public sector and private sectors;
  • Editing and producing written content for technical/policy briefs;
  • Providing support for targeted communications via official GEO blog posts;
  • Providing support for development of topical Climate Change Working Group content on GEO website;
  • Carrying out other tasks to support the implementation of the GEO Climate Change Working Group’s roadmap, as requested.

Qualifications

Ability to work in an international team. Ability to establish and maintain professional contacts with GEO's members and participating organizations. Demonstrated ability to write technical and policy reports. Proven ability to organize and execute multi-stakeholder events with senior representatives in international fora. Sense of integrity and responsibility. Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Education

Postgraduate degree in Social Sciences, Public Policy, International Relations, Development Cooperation, International Economics, or related fields. Additional qualifications in relevant science subjects such as Climatology, Atmospheric / Earth Sciences, Geography, Geophysics etc. are a bonus.

Experience

At least 2 years of combined national and international experience in relevant climate policy research. Knowledge of and experience with international climate negotiations under the UNFCCC. Knowledge of and experience with Earth observations and remote sensing technologies, working with research and space agencies. Knowledge of and experience with international climate finance in the public and/or private sector, including the Green Climate Fund, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and similar funds or initiatives. Experience planning and promoting international events with senior level representatives. Extensive experience writing reports, briefs, documents and correspondence in English.

Languages

Excellent English language skills. Another UN language would be considered an asset. Note: the working language of the GEO Secretariat is English.

Deliverables for the payment

  • Report including a mapping of existing remote sensing technologies for greenhouse gas monitoring across the public sector and private sectors;
  • Demonstrated progress in the organization of a GEO climate finance campaign and engagement with partners;
  • Delivery of a (virtual) GEO Climate Workshop (tentatively scheduled for September 2021), and related workshop report;
  • Delivery of multiple (virtual) events throughout 2021 and at COP26 (November 2021), and related reports.

Payment

This is an entry-level assignment for postgraduates. The consultancy value is CHF 31,500 to be paid in 9 monthly instalments of CHF 3,500.

Timeline

The consultancy has a duration of 9 months (April – December 2021).
