Organizational Context & Project Description

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disaster risk and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR is headquartered in Geneva has more than 100 staff located across the world. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress of the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

The position is located in Bonn, Germany, works within the PreventionWeb team and reports to the Communications, Advocacy, Knowledge Management, Technology and Design Section. The incumbent reports to PreventionWeb Managing Editor, based in Geneva.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of PreventionWeb managing editor or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Digital media officer will:

  • Monitor news media, social media and other key sources to identify relevant content for publication on PreventionWeb, as per PreventionWeb content strategy and editorial policy.
  • Maintain PreventionWeb content monitoring system and suggest new content sources.
  • Draft headlines, abstracts, captions and other text. Format entries with taxonomy, images, and related links to ensure comprehensiveness, timeliness, reliability of content published in PreventionWeb knowledge base.
  • Process user submissions and liaise with users as necessary. Answer public inquiries.
  • Create social media content (such as tweets, social tiles, surveys etc) to promote PreventionWeb products and services and support UNDRR advocacy efforts.
  • Curate content from the knowledge base to create editorial packages on selected topics.
  • Conduct outreach activities to improve use and awareness of PreventionWeb products and services
  • Develop training material and user manuals, trains staff in use of content management system.
  • Monitor and analyse web and social media analytics
  • Contribute to developing, updating, maintaining and implementing editorial policies, content management guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures, and outreach strategies.
  • Provide input to technological development of site features from the editorial perspective.
  • Identify issues and trends in digital media and advise on appropriate action/responses.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country
  • Provide annual and end of assignment reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities using UNV’s Volunteer Reporting Application
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Outputs

As an active UNDRR team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNDRR and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

  • Contribute to the daily update of PreventionWeb with relevant content for and from the DRR community.
  • Contribute to the development of new site features, products and services.
  • Contribute to the development of digital content in support of UNDRR communications and advocacy activities more broadly.
  • Promote engagement of internal and external audiences in the use and production of PreventionWeb content through outreach and community management.
  • The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-) governmental counter-parts, including Implementing Partners (IPs);
  • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development dur-ing the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed
