Volunteerism for disaster risk reduction

This report combines a literature review, case studies and results from a survey on the capabilities and capacity of the major national Voluntary Sector Organizations (VSOs) operating in Emergency Management (EM) in Canada. The study also examines

UNV Myanmar, in collaboration with UNDP and UNICEF, implements a Disaster Risk Reduction Youth Volunteer project in support of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. The project strengthens community resilience to disasters through Youth Volunteers across three pilot areas within the country—Ayeyarwaddy, Mon, and Rakhine.

Voluntary service is one of the fundamental basis for the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, and its role is decisive in achieving the objectives set out by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The contributions of volunteers were the topic of a parallel session at the the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas.

This document presents the findings of a study on the role of volunteers in response, recovery and community rebuilding following the 2015 Nepal Earthquake. It found that volunteerism served to strengthen local institutions in the disaster-affected sites, mobilize and develop the capacities of distraught communities, and increase coordination efforts among key players that responded to the earthquake. Volunteers were also trained to "build back better" in the reconstruction of buildings to decrease vulnerability to future disasters.
