The course will introduce the concepts of flood risk analysis and management within the context of current UK policies and legislation, drawing on the experience of the tutors. Current techniques in considering climate change and joint probability will be presented in outline, as will latest guidance on producing flood risk assessments. Due to the size of the subject, the course will focus on river and urban flooding. However, much of the course content will have relevance to tidal and coastal flooding.

Course content
The course will cover:
Policy and legislation:

  • UK and EC legislation and implications for UK stakeholders
  • Overview of methods for implementation

Risk analysis:

  • What is risk?
  • How can you manage risk?
  • Examples of risk analysis and mapping

Climate change:

  • Overview of current understanding
  • Application to flood risk

Joint probability:

  • When should this be considered?
  • Assessment methods
  • Supporting tools

Flood mitigation:

  • Introduction to structural and non-structural measures
  • Flood forecasting and warning

Integrated urban drainage:

  • Types of drainage systems
  • Greenfield and development runoff
  • Use of SuDS

Flood Risk Assessments (FRA):

  • Use in development planning
  • Requirements of an FRA
  • Practicalities of an FRA
