Workshop on weather warning system

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will conduct a seminar-workshop for municipal mayors and members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC)on the use of weather warning systems.

DOST agencies involved in the workshop are the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI).

Topics during the one-day workshop include weather disturbances, climate change and the use of the Atmospheric Weather System (AWS) and the Atmospheric Rain Gauge (ARG) data for disaster preparedness.

The activity is part of the DOST’s efforts to empower disaster council members and enable them to be more effective in responding and managing the consequences of disasters and calamities in the area.

Lecturers and resource speakers for the workshop are personnel of PAGASA in their various fields of expertise. PAGASA Weather Specialist II Leticia Dispo of the Regional Services Division of Northern Luzon will lecture on the weather system affecting the Philippines while Rusy Abastillas of the Climatological and Agrometereological Division of PAGASA will discuss climate variability and change.

Hilario Esperanza will explain the Floods, Warning System and Flood Preparedness, followed by demonstration by Erie Estrella of the Engineering and Technical Services Division of PAGASA of the Weather and Basic Maintenance/Visualization and use of the AWS data. The officer-in-charge of the Plans and Programs Development Unit of PAGASA will speak on PAGASA’s Initiatives and Disaster Management.(JDP/DBC-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
