Mission

DOST is the premiere science and technology body in the Philippines charged with the twin mandate of providing central direction, leadership and coordination of all scientific and technological activities, and of formulating policies, programs and projects to support national development.

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.

Philippines: Local experts develop quake-proof desks for preschoolers

A research team has developed a resilient study desk for kindergartens that contains a warning system when earthquakes occur. Called LAMESA, it is a safety infrastructure for students to use, and a learning tool to passive disaster preparation of kindergarten.

DOST-PHIVOLCS establishes the first borehole seismic station in the Philippines

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has established the country's very first borehole seismic monitoring station in Tanauan City, Batangas. The station, designated the "VTTA," is solar-powered and will monitor activity beneath the Taal Volcano and quakes caused by active fault movements.

Workshop on weather warning system

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will conduct a seminar-workshop for municipal mayors and members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC)on the use of weather warning systems.

Annual report 2003

Two volcanoes, Kanlaon and Mayon showed signs of unrest in 2003 prompting PHIVOLCS to raise their Alert Level status. Both volcanoes produced ash explosions although no damage was inflicted on the surrounding settlements.
