Latest additions to the knowledge base

In 2022, the world saw floods in Pakistan, droughts in the Horn of Africa, and hurricanes in the Caribbean. With each new day comes yet another headline pointing to a climate disaster unfolding somewhere in the world.

The two-year project aimed to support the implementation of Korea Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) at the national scale and promote planning and implementation of climate adaptation measures in climate-sensitive sectors.

In our first blog post as a member of HIF’s Journey to Scale 2021-2022 cohort, we introduced our innovation, DMS Himalaya, which enables remote and marginalised Himalayan communities to contribute to disaster management at the local level.

Dorji Wangmo from Tencho village in Lunana, one of Bhutan’s northern-most regions, still vividly remembers how she and others in the community ran for their lives when a glacial lake outburst flood struck Lunana on 7 October 1994.

Against the backdrop of a changing climate, extreme weather is fast becoming the new normal in South Asia. The landlocked kingdom of Bhutan, which has seen severe flooding more frequently over the past decade, is no exception.

The Hindu Kush Himalayas is sometimes called the “Third Pole”, due to having one of the world’s largest concentrations of snow and glaciers. But with the acceleration of the effects of climate change, the glaciers are retreating rapidly.

The Government of Bhutan has gained international attention for its policies to address climate change. 

Climate change has accentuated natural hazards, including flash floods caused by melting of snow and ice in many regions of the world.
