Dubai Police, UNDRR talk crisis and disasters resilience

The Dubai Police have recently organised a workshop, in association with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS), on making Dubai resilient against crisis and disasters. 

The two-day workshop, which was held at the General Department of Communications at the Dubai Police General HQ, is in line with the ‘Making Dubai Resilient’ programme which aims to enhance Dubai’s ability to cope with all risks arising from crises and disasters, and the ability to contain and recover in a limited time, all within a participatory system that works in accordance with international best practices and applying latest innovations in scientific research and foreseeing the future.

The workshop was inaugurated by Sujit Mohanty: Chief of United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) / Arab States office, in the presence of Krisi Madi, Director, UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction UNISDR; Brigadier Khalid Ali Shuhail , Director of Community Happiness at Dubai Police; Brigadier Khalid Al Marri, Deputy Director of Operations for Communications Affairs; Colonel Ahmad Ateej buRqeba, Head of Dubai Police Crisis and Risk Management Centre and a number of senior officers and security experts. 

In his speech, Brigadier Al Marri said the emirate of Dubai continues to build and manage all available means in the field of risk reduction and management through building capacities of human resources at all levels.

He added that Dubai has always focused on the concept of infrastructure management, and the legislation and adoption of risk management concepts in all strategies, policies and legislation adopted by the emirate across its agencies and departments. 

He said the technical workshop provides an overview of the ten essentials for making cities resilient developed under the "Making Cities Resilient Global Campaign" and its linkage with the global frameworks including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.

Meanwhile, Krisi Madi praised Dubai Police efforts in enhancing awareness and knowledge of targeted stakeholders working on disaster risk reduction at the local level. And their keenness on applying the tools and techniques of the Making Cities Resilient campaign; developing and implementing city resilience plan; and becoming an example for other cities in the region and globally.
