MSc in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation for Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction
Location
Overijssel
Degree
MSc Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, specialization in Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction
Description
ITC offers a two-year, full-time academic programme, in an international environment of students and faculty staff from all over the world. Emphasis is on dealing with natural hazards and disaster risk from a combined geo-information and earth science perspective.
Students will gain insight in methods to evaluate how hazards, vulnerability and disaster risk may change in a context of global challenges caused by climate change, ongoing urbanization and increased use of natural resources. Students take courses and other study units to a value of 120 credits: common ITC courses (25 credits), hazard & risk specialization courses (28 credits), elective courses (22 credits), and an individual MSc research phase (45 credits).
The courses offer a mix of theory and practice. More than half of the time is reserved for hands-on training and project work, using real world hazard and risk examples that are often linked to international projects.
Learn to predict and monitor multi-hazard risk using geo-spatial technology and help reduce vulnerability to flooding, landslides and other natural hazards.
Themes
- Geo-Information science and earth observation
- Spatial-temporal modelling of surface processes and natural hazards
- Changing vulnerability and risk
- Multi-hazard risk assessment
- Scenario modelling of risk reduction measures
- Post-disaster damage assessment and remediation
Target audience
This programme is for students who want to become experts in applying state-of-the-art remote sensing and GIS technology for the modelling and assessment of natural hazards and disaster risk, and the use of this information in disaster risk reduction. Students often have a background in earth science, geography, engineering, or environmental science.
Admission requirement
We expect you to have a BSc degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (i.e. comparable to upper second class standing or higher). Proficiency in the English language (IELTS score of 6.0 or more) is a prerequisite.
