Live to Tell in Korea - Building the Capacity of Incheon City Officials to Implement Disaster Risk Reduction and the Making Cities Resilient campaign in Incheon Metropolitan City, Korea

Aim

This workshop aims to build the capacity and understanding of Incheon city officials about the Making Cities Resilient global campaign, its ‘Ten Essentials for Resilient Cities’, the sign-up process and best practices towards becoming a role model city. It further aims to capture good practice and enhance disaster risk-sensitive planning in the city.

IDDR 2016

This workshop also coincides with the week of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), celebrated on 13 October. The 2016 campaign will seek to create a wave of awareness about actions taken to reduce mortality around the world. During this workshop, participants will also reflect on how Incheon is improving how people are becoming more risk informed.

The day began in 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction. Held every 13 October, the day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.

The 2016 edition marks the launch of the new "Sendai Seven" campaign, centred on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework, the first of which is reducing disaster mortality.

Outcomes

• Improved understanding of disaster risk reduction, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the role of local authorities in its implementation
• Improved understanding of social disaster and cooperation within working divisions in the Republic of South Korea, as well as the Korean disaster management system during disaster situations
• Regular training seminars have been requested to continue to support the capacity development of city officials in implementing the Sendai Framework at local level as part of Incheon’s commitment to Making Cities Resilient

The Making Cities Resilient (MCR) campaign offers guidance, tools and a community of local authorities and other relevant stakeholders to help support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the UN Member States adopted a global blueprint for reducing disaster risk and increasing resilience, at the local level.
