The Institution

Only recently founded in January 2012, Rabdan Academy, a duel sector institution, will produce outstanding graduates in such fields as safety, security, defence, emergency preparedness and crisis management. The graduates of the Academy will be highly sought after as team members and leaders and will be able to efficiently and effectively respond, using a multi-sector perspective, to deal with all types of threats, hazards, incidents and crises. Rabdan graduates will be life-long and adaptive learners and be able to deal with new kinds of threats as they arise. Current students are nominated and sponsored by stakeholder organizations - the General Headquarters UAE Armed Forces (GHQ), Abu Dhabi Police, Ministry of Interior (MOI), and the Police.

Key Responsibilities of the position

Reporting directly to the Program Chair IEM/BCM, the Assistant Professor BCM will:

  • Develop program and course materials in consultation with curriculum specialists, program and course developers and other faculty members, advisory committees and boards;
  • Define program and course objectives and evaluate and validate these objectives;
  • Specify and approve learning approaches, necessary resources and equipment;
  • Develop individual instructional techniques;
  • Select and approve print and non-print learning materials;
  • Ensure student awareness of course objectives, approach and evaluation;
  • Conduct regularly scheduled lectures and tutorial instruction;
  • Provide academic counselling of students;
  • Evaluate students’ progress and assume full responsibility for the overall assessment of the students’ work;
  • Contribute to research projects and initiatives; and
  • Participate in curriculum design, other consultative committees and duties as required.

Key Attributes of the position

The Assistant Professor BCM must:

  • Have a robust knowledge of the subject matter and be able to demonstrate a record of teaching excellence;
  • Actively support and monitor student learning;
  • Be driven to keep abreast of developments, initiatives and thought leadership in the relevant field;
  • Have a keen sense of awareness to the sensitivities of students and faculty;
  • Have clear thoughts on what the students should know at the end of each semester and be able to sense when students need more time to absorb material;
  • Have a sound understanding of current and future advances in learning methods;
  • Be astute to evolving trends and learning methodologies in BCM
  • Have the capacity and preparedness to accept and undertake administrative tasks as required;
  • Be a natural leader who motivates to achieve learning excellence; and
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English (Arabic language would be an advantage)

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Business Continuity Management or a Master’s degree combined with an appropriate amount of experience in Business Continuity programs or a related field.
  • A demonstrated track record of high quality teaching performance.
  • Scholarly contributions and/or creative contributions in the relevant field appropriate to the academic position.
  • Demonstrated service to the academic life of an academy or university or other institution where appropriate contributions to the professional community have been made.
  • At least 2 years academy or university teaching at assistant professor grade in the relevant field.
  • Experience in maintaining and managing programs in business continuity management programs with involvement in business continuity operations.
  • Knowledge and use of current teaching technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to large and small groups.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Experience in undertaking course design and program development.

Desirable:

  • Vocational qualifications in BCM with a comprehensive understanding of all - hazards comprehensive business continuity management, risk management, and disaster recovery planning.
