Over the last 4 years, the river and its surrounding area within the Amazon basin have experienced a lava dam collapse, 500 million tons of sediment displaced down the river, landslides and the formation of what is dubbed the "Ecuadorian Grand Canyon."

The Ecuadorian Red Cross activated its Early Action Protocol (EAP) for Extreme Rainfall related to the El Niño Phenomenon. It has constantly monitored forecasts for each trigger threshold listed – and now the third trigger has been reached.
